In this interesting video from core77, making hats in the old style is shown. Four girls in their twenties run the 90-year-old business in San Francisco, making their living through these hats.
One issue addressed was that of the male psychology of buying versus the female psychology - men are more apt to pay more money for a lasting purchase. Women would not generally make that kind of commitment.
